Hydroseeding Pros and Cons

Over the years we have taken part in Hydroseeding acers of lawns. I’m one of those contractors that likes hydroseeding because I have seen how healthier the grass is when grown from seed verses sodding. I used my yard as an experiment, I planted two areas with seed and laid two areas with two different types of sod. The seeding areas out performed the sodded areas. They were more drought tolerant and less susceptible to disease. I also don’t like laying sod!

When we hydroseed a customer’s yard we hire Black Hills Hydroturf in Rapid City SD. It is always done the same way! Prep the soil, what I mean is this. You need good loose top soil at least 4” to 6” thick. The topsoil can not be hard and compact! Your topsoil needs to have the proper nutrients (Organic matter) with correct amounts of Sand, Silt and Clay. Either you work with what you have by amending the soil with what’s needed, or you import the soil (NOTE: not all imported topsoil is good!). So make sure what you are buying is good topsoil! Once the soil is ready, we broadcast seed over the topsoil. Then the contractor adds wood fiber mulch, fertilizer and seed to the Hydroseeding Equipment and sprays the yard. It needs to be sprayed evenly and thick enough to cover the topsoil. The purpose of the mulch is to protect the seed and help retain moisture.

BENEFITS OF HYDROSEEDING

1. Much is better than just broadcasting the seed over the topsoil. The mulch protects the seed from birds and helps keep moisture on the seed.
2. More cost effective than sod. Hydroseeding cost range from 0.12 cents to 0.20 per sq ft.
3. Allows for custom seeding. Plant the best seed for your climate, appearance and location.
4. Healthier root systems.
5. Good for sloped areas (Add Tackifier for sloped areas).

DISADVATAGES OF HYDROSEEDING

1. Unlike sod laying. Hydroseeding won’t give you a lawn overnight.
2. Heavy rains can wash the Hydroseeding away. Sometimes this depends on the slop.
3. To get the lawn established takes more time in water management and care. Growth time, grass begins to emerge 7 – 10 days and 4 to 6 weeks the grass is 2 to 4 inches tall. First mowing is 7 to 9 weeks. The type of grass, time of year and temperature have a factor on how long it takes the grass to mature.
4. Fall seeding is not as successful. Where we live in South Dakota, hydroseeding needs to get done before the middle of September if you want a lawn before winter. In order for most seed to germinate the soil temperatures need to be 50 to 60 degrees.
5. Can be more exposed to weed germination.
